Welfare Reforms logoThis year, the government is introducing a number of changes to the way that benefits are administered and calculated.   The council’s website provides updates about these changes as information becomes available, as some of the changes are yet to be finalised by the government.

From 1 April 2013, changes came in to:

  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Housing Benefit ‘under-occupation’ changes for people renting from a council or housing association
  • Crisis Loans and Community Care Grants

There are a number of other benefits that will be affected.  There is lots of information and guidance on the council’s Welfare Reforms pages. If you receive any benefit, you are advised to check these pages.

lat logoThe next joint Local Action Team (LAT) and Tenants’ meeting is on Wednesday 27th March 2013, 7.00pm at St Richards Church Hall, Beal Crescent. The meeting is an opportunity to raise any issues of concern; it can be about anti-social behaviour, the environment, fly tipping, or housing.

Local councillors, Community Warden and the local PCSO all attend.  We would also be interested to hear any suggestions  you may have on ways to improve the neighbourhood.  For more information, contact Liz Lee 01273 236 160.

house of moneyHousing Benefit is changing for ‘working-age’ people from 1 April 2013. ‘Working age’ means anyone under 61 as at April 2013. The government is introducing a ‘size criteria’ which will limit how many bedrooms your family will receive benefit for. If you have more bedrooms than the government say you need, your benefit will be reduced. The amount of the reduction will depend on how many extra bedrooms you have.
