FHBW - external siteArboriculturalist Alister Peters will give a talk on working with trees on Saturday 18 May 2:30pm at the Brian Foster Environment Centre, Dorothy Stringer School, Stringer Way off Surrenden Road BN1 6PZ.  This is a free event open to FHBW members and non-members with tea and homemade cakes.

Brighton and Hove Friends of the Earth is working with Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods (FHBW) to create a new haven for local bees. The site is one of 60 ‘Bee Worlds’ springing up around the country as part of Friends of the Earth’s Bee Cause campaign.

red mason beeThe south facing bank is currently overgrown and will be transformed into perfect habitat for solitary bees under threat.

The action will take place on January 6th 2013 and both groups will be clearing the steep slope to expose chalky soil which some bees love.  If you’d like to get involved, please contact: Monica Jennings on 07712038533  or monica_jennings@hotmail.co.uk, or email: info@fhbw.org.uk.

Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods will be planting up to 400 trees and shrubs in order to improve Burstead Woods a small strip of woodland in Hollingdean. Volunteers needed for woodland working sessions with the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods.  Next sessions:FHBW - external site

  • Sunday 2 September: tidying hedge and clearing the “forget-me-not” glade
  • Saturday 6 October: mowing new butterfly glade and planting wildflower seed
  • Both sessions are 10am – 1pm

New members are very welcome. You can come and try a work session without joining.  Join us each month (alternate Sats and Suns). Get some fresh air and help the environment on your doorstep. All welcome – you don’t need any experience and you don’t have to stay for the whole session. All help is much appreciated.

Come to Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods’ family picnic and take a guided walk through the woods where the Ranger and members of the group will show you work that has already been carried out, and point out areas where changes could be made under the new Plan.

The council, together with the Friends of Hollingbury and Burstead Woods (FHBW) has drafted a Plan about caring for Hollingbury & Burstead Woods in future years.  Anyone can respond to the consultation, open until July 20.

The Ranger and FHBW members will be available to answer questions and take comments at two consultation events:

  • Wed 13th June 3-5pm Hollingdean Children’s Centre, Brentwood Rd BN1 7DY
  • Sat 16th June  Hollingbury Library, Carden Hill BN1 8DA.
